Many DVD players have a "secret" code that can change the region. Region '0' would make the DVD player region free. Another route is to use your computer. Be careful though, initially the DVD player in the computer is region free, but after 5 region changes it locks to the region of the last disc. There are free DVD rippers that can rip the DVD's content to your hard drive, and in the process removes the region encoding so the DVD content on your hard drive is region free. You can then use another program to make a new region free DVD or watch it on your computer.
This is what I do. I rip DVD, encode it in Handbrake (on a Mac) for Apple TV, add it to my iTunes library and enjoy it on my television and stereo. I'm getting ready to watch the concert for the first time!
Edit: An example on how to make your DVD player region free.
I have an older Oppo DVD player that was easily made region free by doing the following.
1. On the remote press 'Setup'
2. Enter 9 2 1 0
The region menu appears
3. Enter 0 (for region free - or you can enter a specific region number)
4. Press 'Select' to return to the setup menu.
If there is a code you can usually find it by doing a google search say 'Panasonic DVD region free'
and search for a result that says 'How to make a Panasonic DVD player region free' or something like that. Typically I would say that all DVD players from a particular manufacturer can be made region free the with the same code.
Beware: If you have a blu-ray / dvd player this may not be made region free as the blu-ray licensing states that the player can not be made region free straight from the manufacturer. Oppo's blu-ray / dvd players can no longer be made region free with just a code. (At least this is the way it was about 2 years ago.)
