PostSubject: Any C-pop recommendations?   Thu Dec 05, 2013 11:53 am

Hey everyone! As an alan fan, I listen to her Chinese releases (obviously). Now that I've gotten used to the language, I'm interested in listening to other artists in the genre!

Anyone got any good recommendations? I'm open for pretty much anything!

Thanks~ Bye

(I don't know if there's already a thread for this... If there is, you can totally just get rid of this one xD)

If you like Gothic/Darkwave/Electronic music infused with a bit of traditional Chinese music, give SingerSen a try. She's got a pretty amazing voice, and her experimental style is unlike most stuff you'd find in C-pop (as far as I know). Although, she still has some pretty Pop-ish songs as well.

Click Spoiler for youtube links:

Spoiler:

Also give Sa Dingding a try. Similar to SingerSen, but with more Mongolian and Tibetan folk influences, and she sings in multiple languages (Mandarin, Tibetan, Sanskrit).

Spoiler:

That (and alan) is about all I enjoy out of C-pop. Anything else I listen to that's in Mandarin or Cantonese is pretty much Rock and Metal, lol.

then i would recommend some
i try to show some great voices, almost all of them have some kind of tibetan or highland, connection (even if some only remotely). imho they are above the average, many of these songs have traditional elements, yet many of them probably qualify as "c-pop"Angel

雪莲三姐妹 - 圆圈圈
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNTU4MzIxODA0.html

you can listen their whole album online here:
http://www.xiami.com/album/576785?spm=a1z1s.3521865.23310001.1.UaegLQ

truly talented trio

---------------

云朵 - 我的楼兰

you can listen her two albums online here:
http://www.xiami.com/album/420299?spm=a1z1s.6659513.0.0.kjd1Mo
http://www.xiami.com/album/1071624160?spm=0.0.0.0.m8NsUJ

she is quite good for a "c-pop" singer, and not afraid to let her voice out

---------------

兰卡措 - 月光恋人

http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMjAxODY4MTc2.html

you can listen her best album here:
http://www.xiami.com/album/7826

and the other two here:
http://www.xiami.com/album/342102?spm=a1z1s.6659513.226669510.11.kjd1Mo
http://www.xiami.com/album/437994?spm=a1z1s.6659513.0.0.C70wMZ

on her first album (雪域刀妹), she had a different name (刀妹) many songs, are my all time favorites from this album. she has a fantastic voice.

---------------

旺姆 - 大草原小情歌

you can listen her albums here:
http://www.xiami.com/album/565663?spm=a1z1s.6659513.226669510.11.WFFOfn
http://www.xiami.com/album/420334?spm=a1z1s.6659509.6856557.10.JA1bqe

and again she is not your average "c-pop" singer Hahaha

---------------

热们泽 - 轮回的爱

http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNDI5MTM2MzI0.html

you can listen her albums here:
http://www.xiami.com/album/465003?spm=a1z1s.6659513.226669510.11.8IFw3t
http://www.xiami.com/album/434674?spm=a1z1s.6659509.6856557.10.nuuwqx

for some reason she has no real mv floating around on the web Gloom
but i really like her songs. she is "qiang" just like 云朵 but i like her voice more

---------------
and some artist whom i like but less likely to qualify as your average "c-pop"
---------------

米线

you can listen her many albums here: (i've picked these two)
http://www.xiami.com/album/292416?spm=0.0.0.0.C08gBz
http://www.xiami.com/album/349013?spm=0.0.0.0.hGRbqz

WANG Luobin 王洛宾: The Chinese Great Composer - Father of Northwestern Chinese folk songs

And if you like folk songs as well, I must mention one great Chinese composer who produced a lot everlasting folk songs, he's WANG Luobin 王洛宾, and regarded as the Father of Northwestern Chinese folk songs.

He spent more than 50 years traveling around the Northwestern part of China (Xin Jiang, Qinghai, Gansu provinces), collecting and adapting more than 700 songs into eight albums, which became very popular not only in China but throughout the world. His works are now considered classic in the Chinese musical world.

One of his quite famous tune is 'A Half Moon Climbs Up the Sky'.

Here's more stuff I recommend, this time focusing more on China and Taiwan's indie scene which is more of what I listen to from either places. Sorry it's a little long, but there are some pretty fantastic bands/artists from both scenes, so it's worth it to give some of these lesser-known artists a listen.

Cicada - a 6-piece chamber music/Post-Rock band from Taiwan. Purely instrumental.

匯流向海 into the Ocean

當叢花毅然綻放 Blooms in Dark

My Skin Against Your Skin 激膚樂團 - female-fronted Post-Punk/Garage Rock Revival band from Taiwan.

Bloody Tales

Good

Man in Uniform

Romantic Brain

邁向崩毀黎明的年代

Ivana Wong 王菀之 - Cantopop singer. I think she's fairly popular/mainstream, but I'm not too familiar with her work. It seems she likes to experiment around with other genres than just pop, however - examples being the songs below.

Made of Water

Frandé 法蘭黛樂團 - Female-fronted Electronic/Post-Rock band from Taiwan.

閃電 Lightning

輓歌 Elegy

Elephant Gym 大象體操 - Instrumental Math Rock from Taiwan, though they do collaborate with singers on certain songs.

銀河 Galaxy

夜洋風景 Ocean in the Night feat. 洪申豪

頭, 身體 Head&Body (it's actually two seperate songs on the album, with "Head" acting more as an intro to "Body")

口的形狀 Speaking in Tongues ft. 林宥嘉Yoga Lin (It's actually Yoga Lin's song, but w/e.)

tfvsjs - another instrumental Math Rock band, this time from Hong Kong.

Days of Daze

Seven Sense 七朵组合 - The ONLY girl group I willingly listen to, lol. They combine C-pop with traditional Chinese instruments, melodies and imagery. It helps set them apart from the myriad of girl groups in Asia, whether they be Chinese, Korean, Japanese or otherwise.

咏春

玉生烟

宮商角徵羽

Toffee 太妃堂 - a 4-piece band from Taiwan that fuse traditional Chinese instruments (erhu, pipa and guzheng in this case) and melodies with Pop/Hip Hop/Rn'B.

夜來香「太妃電電版」

首波抒情主打 (I guess the MC isn't in every song, and thank god for that. He's the only element of their music I don't like, lol)

繡花鞋 Vintage Love

I think that's all for now. Hope you guys enjoy!

F.I.R
is a Taiwanese pop rock band
their vocalist is Faye and she's a very talented singer

"Hero"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sH05o1AuHI
"Once I Loved" 愛過
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJAqg5720Ew
"Crescent Moon Bay" 月牙灣

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZXE20ScmPY (official MV – but very poor sound in this video)
"Robus Times" 荼靡時代
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w844LSLj23s
"Thousand Years of Love" 千年之戀
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fTrPL5b4Lg
"Dim Light" 微光
"The Tenth Planet" 第十行星
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xid2_r9uGpc
"Let Love Go" 把愛放開
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2fqr6W_2AQ
"Spend Not A Flower" "花非花
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zsIM087msw

Nan Ni [南妮]
her voice is so mild and tender, angelic, ethereal... phenomenal
from album released in 2011:

03.断桥残雪
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkZnNXfOTNg
05.我的心好冷
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6PHohjtn7U
11.考验
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzQwMDQ5NjQ4.html
08.叹服
no link unfortunately
02.爱上你是一个错
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQQp5fk_bUs
04.寂寞才说爱
10.放手去爱
no link unfortunately
12.天长地久
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_HDNW8CBNc

I doubt these are her songs, most likely she's just singing covers as I found different versions of some titles on YT, but anyway she's worth listening, it's pure pleasure...

full album:
http://www.xiami.com/album/434766?spm=a1z1s.6659509.6856557.10.WnEQxQ
(I hope it's still there, for the last year xiami was available in my country and now it's not, so I cannot check it...)

Kykko Zeng  / Zeng Yan / 曾檐

Her album "One" released on 5th Jan 2012 is the best Chinese album I've listened to so far...
http://www.xiami.com/album/485063?spm=a1z1s.6659509.6856557.7.OFUolY

the best titles according to me:
Empty, Dedication Of The Sky, Water, Fire, Lost memory, Wood, Gold, The call of the sky, Soil

Tracklist (chinese/english):

01.空  / Empty

- impressive intro

02.天空之禮 / Dedication Of The Sky

album version: http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNTAzNzQ1ODY0.html

live performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmamIp9oMgo

03.水 / Water
no link unfortunately

04.很久以前的故事 / The Story Of A Long Time Ago
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4i0BsbtnwQ

05.遺失的記憶 / Lost Memory

06.烏鴉的夢 / Crow’s Dream

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5g1P7N3CgBM

- sounds a lot like "Feng Huang" by alan, but take note: Kykko Zeng's album came out five moths earlier than "Love song"
I guess it must be some traditional Chinese melody that's been used in both songs...

07.木 / Wood

http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzY4NjUxMTUy.html

08.森林之舞 / Dance Of The Forest

09.火 / Fire

- so unpredictable & unique composition

10.金/ Gold

- my favourite track on the album

11.天空下的呼喚 / The Call Of The Sky

- amazing song, mix of some folk music, electronics, and metal/ gothic rock

http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzY4NjI3MDgw.html

12.土 / Soil

live performance version, shorter than album version by one minute (introduction cut out):
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzY4NjcxNzE2.html

13.一的距離 / A Distance Of

Vie / 生
- EP released on 22nd Dec 2012
songs:

02. the train dragging of time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORCo2A6PGCY

04.Where Is Your Castle In The Sky / 哪裡是你的天空之城
no link, the video from YT has been removed unfortunately...

05.Till The End Of The World / 直到世界末日
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7wO33-ni9E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5v9uTQAn64

- a beautiful cover of Chris de Burgh's song

and a Tibetan song:
Zeng Yan / 曾檐 - 祈祷 / Pray
