I think, a lot of people are discovered J-Pop with Ayumi Hamasaki. To me, the first japanese singer I've heard was Yui Horie, but the artist who has really convert me is Ayumi Hamasaki.

It was probably Utada Hikaru followed by Ayumi Hamasaki back in high school, but it was J-Rock that primarily held my interest.
