"Japanese Star" that Graduated from the PLA

After the Tibetan girl, alan, graduated from the PLA, she carried onto an "Hamasaki Ayumi" dream and went to Japan to start her own stardom journey.

With a complicated feeling, alan went up on stage. The minute the curtains opened, her mind totally went blank.

The venue was packed. The music started. In the darkness, four thousand people all held their breathe because they were waiting for alan's first line.

She stood in the middle of the white curtains. Through the silk screens, she could see a faint wave of light sticks and some people even called out her name.

This is her first concert in her entire lifetime. It was held at Japan Tokyo's Showa Women's University Hitomi Memorial Hall. She rehearsed for a long time and predicted every kind of situations that might happen. But on January 24, 2010, an accident still happened.

"It was like I was covered. I couldn't think of the lyrics. There were so many tangled up thoughts in my mind. "In that kind of a situation, you can't control that kind of atmosphere."

"A Traditional Tibetan"

Three years ago, Alan Dawa Dolma graduated from the People's Liberation Army Art Academy's music department. She went to Tokyo after celebrating her 20th birthday at home with her parents.

This decision wasn't approved in her home.

This is a Kham Tibetan family. After transferring out of the army, alan's father who worked as government worker for the rest of his life also couldn't understand. After graduating from the PLA, why can she find a job where she will be stable for life? As a contract singer and going to Japan--Is that a stable life?

Their family are Tibetans that came from Sichuan Garzê Prefecture Wenchuan County's Beauty Valley. Garzê is known for two specialties: Kangding's men and Wenchuan's beautiful women.

Are you really Tibetan? You don't look like it at all? After growing up, many strangers had complimented on her beauty, so I couldn't resist asking.

She doesn't like this kind of question. I am a pure Tibetan. She wasn't satisfied and pointed to her own face: You look at my eyes, nose, face and you tell me, how do I not look like a Tibetan?

In the quiet Beauty Valley, generations after generations change.

alan stayed in Beauty Valley at her grandmother's house for 4 to 5 years. She misses her childhood in Beauty Valley because that was the best time of her life in her memories. When she had time to slack off, everyone would gather together and play. Tibetans are natural-born singers and drinkers. When they sing refreshing songs, they can produce a bright sound. The little alan would also sing with the adults.

"Tibetan wails are like something in our blood. I never professionally learned it before." She thinks about it a bit and laments "if I stayed in Beauty Valley longer, then maybe my high notes will be even prettier."

When she was six, her father moved her to Kangding County. She is naturally hyperactive, so her father made her learn calligraphy to calm herself down, but she's not interested in it at all. Her Tibetan singer mother released that when she plays the erhu, alan will calm down and just sit there in a trance.

When she was in the 4th grade in elementary school, alan applied for the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. With her beautiful playing with the erhu, she got first place and successfully entered the school and it was paid for by the government. With high school graduation in three months, alan was guaranteed a spot at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. It might be because of the lack of excitement that this result didn't make her happy at all. Then why don't you and your mom go try out Beijing's schools? alan's father said and it might be easy to major in Mingzhu University of China--alan's father's alta mater.

When she went to Mingzhu, alan accidentally saw a group of handsome guys in army uniforms eating in a restaurant beside Mingzhu. alan said which school are you guys from? The guys pointed across the street at the PLA. She ran over to the PLA to try out and played her erhu. The admissions clerk asked what else can you do? alan's mother said her singing is pretty good! Just let her try! Actually, she has never professionally learned singing, but she just sings along with her mother sometimes.

"Goal is the General Political Department"

“alan is a very playful girl. Her personality is probably not suited for the army career." The singer Li Shuang Jiang was alan's examiner when she tried out.

In the spring of 2003, the PLA won first place in CCTV's Young Singers Contest the previous year. The folk-singing alan made Li Shuang Jiang's eyes sparkle: she is the seedling for the next singing contest.

"She has a lot of talent, so that's why I decided to recruit her." Li Shuang Jiang thinks that alan is very sensitive towards music and that her erhu playing is pretty good too. alan missed the appropriate time for auditions to enter the school, but Li Shuang Jiang especially asked the school to make an exception to accept alan. alan didn't enter the second Young Singers Contest for folk songs and it was after attending the school that alan fell in love with pop music. Li Shuang Jiang's views on alan towards pop music is "she has one kind of thought toward pop music and that there may not be a good way, but it will be felt in people's hearts."

September 2006, alan participated in the 9th Asia New Singer Competition. Li Shuang Jiang was one of the judges. In the last, the gold medal was taken away by a Filipino singer and alan only had a 0.005 difference as runner-up.

About alan's plans after graduation, Li Shuang Jiang expressed understanding. "alan is a student with a bright personality and army school's standards are very strict, but we respect whatever our students' decisions."

After the PLA, alan became a famous person around school very quickly.

In 2006's "Super Girl" contest, Xu Fei deeply remembers alan. She's one grade younger than alan. "I would often see her in school and everyone's uniform looked the same, but alan wore it very fashionably and she would stand out." alan later revealed that her uniform was a bit too big, so she made it smaller to fit to her body.

Xu Fei said that alan's grades were very good. When it was time for the music department's mid terms, "with alan performing, many people from other school would admire her and come over to watch. She was like a little celebrity at that time."

When 2006 came, it was alan's last year at the PLA. Many people were already planning for their future after graduation.

"Everyone has their own expectations towards the future." Xu Fei remembered what students that year wanted to do like to become famous, join the art troupe, or go to a record company.

2006 was the year that "Super Girl" was very popular and Xu Fei went to join and got into the top 6.

Many friends tried to convince alan to join the contest and it was a shortcut to fame. alan thought that she won't be able to become a meaningful artist or a singer if she went to "Super Girl".

"I wanted to become an artist, a singer at time time. alan's goal was politics or art troupes.

When she talks about the 10 years of her professional foundation, she would be full of pride. "We are people that plays around with art", she likes to describe herself like that.

Even now, you can see her carries the atmosphere of someone who graduated from the PLA. Even though she accepted 3 years of professional training at Avex and she once held the #1 spot for single sales, she still naturally says "art comes from life more than life and art is a service to the people".

She has never tried to conceal her eagerness to become famous. "If you're learning this kind of business, then who wouldn't want to become famous? Unless you want to lock yourself up in the piano room and sing, then wouldn't you want to share your voice with everyone else?"

During her school years, alan has appeared for many art troupe performances for the soldiers. For some performances, they requested for her to sing "Tian Lu".

Even her teachers suggested for her to join the art troupes. It wouldn't be a problem if she joined the art troupes because "my father's dream is for me to wear my army outfit and my mother's dream is for me to become a solo performer, so I would complete both of their dreams."

The Other Side of School

In those 5 months, alan learned that the "academic route" really isn't going to easy because of "Tian Lu" that so many people loved.

For the '02 graduation party, the school arranged for alan to sing "Tian Lu" with Han Hong who graduated in '95. May 10th was the recording time and Han Hong came (requesting that she only needs "Tian Lu's" CD). alan hoped to sing one of the chorus till the high parts, but the result was that she only needed to sing the opening lines. The high part and the ending will all be sung by Han Hong.

This "duet" of "Tian Lu" was later shown on CCTV. During the performance, alan kept 2 meters of distance between her and Han Hong and she often looked away quickly. When the music started, Han Hong asked people downstage if it's really ok to let her sing first? For the entire performance, alan kept her 2 meters of distance till the end of the song.

After the recording was done on May 10th, alan wrote a blog post that was later deleted:

When I returned home, I cried because I knew that I was really sad then......To be honest, if this wasn't something arranged by the school, I would have just walked out of there......Why can I only sing the chorus? Why can't I even sing the high parts? Is it just because you're famous and I'm not?

"I'm not that kind of a person to fuss over something." When reminded of her "duet" 4 years ago, alan just shook it off "I felt very honored to have been able to sing with her. There's no need to hold a grievance. This is just reality--You have to become more famous or else no one will let you sing."

In front of teachers, alan always behaved and was often favored. Even so, many people could feel her perseverance. Xu Fei said that she and alan didn't want to be bounded. "Maybe for the army, we're just not suited for it."

Decisions

If Avex chose you in the summer of 2006, would you sign a contract with them?

Xu Fei said yes.

When Avex chose alan, she wasn't that sure.

In Asia's largest music industry, Avex has created many female artists that are at the top of pop music. The CEO, Max Matsuura, wanted to find a Chinese girl and use their successful experience to create another Asian diva like Hamasaki Ayumi, Amuro Namie, Koda Kumi, and others.

For 3 months, Max Matsuura, didn't like any of the people that came to audition.

It was at the last day for auditions that alan came. She had a ponytail, still wore her army uniform, and didn't even have time to put on makeup. She just came over from school and she used Chinese phonetics to sing 2 Japanese songs and even played a bit of the erhu.

"When she sang, everyone thought she was great." This was what alan's producer, Kazuhito Kikuchi, said afterward. Kazuhito Kikuchi has composed many songs for Hamasaki Ayumi, Tohoshinki, and many other artists.

On the topic of her being chosen, alan said Japanese people might like my appearance and my voice is a bit special. I can also play the erhu and Japanese people likes the erhu too I think.

alan wasn't sure at that time. The competition in Japan is so fierce, so what would happen if I was eliminiated? I wouldn't be able to go to the art troupes and I would have nothing.

Her family objected and her father who was in the army for 24 years also objected. August 2006, alan and her mother accepted Avex's invitation and went to Tokyo to check everything out.

The CEO went with them to the company's annual concert with their most popular artists. "Every concert has about 30,000 to 40,000 people watching Hamasaki Ayumi and Amuro Namie. You would feel very shocked after watching them." One of the staff member accompanying alan told her that this will also be your future.

The company also sent alan and her mother to go to different places to have fun and shop around. alan's mother thought that this was a "rather nice" company and they're very nice to her daughter, so she had an ease of heart. At the same time, Avex told her they will give her living expenses which made alan very happy.

"I just think about the time where I was in the art troupes and I had to perform in many different places for the troops and I had to sit in an entertainer coach. It feels like 2 different worlds with what I see before me." alan finally became Avex's first Chinese artist.

In Japan

In some hotel in Beijing, alan is so small sitting on the couch after 3 years of experience in Japan. Her hair is lightly curled, a faint makeup, and her light princess styled lace dress makes her look like an Asian Barbie. This is the cute girl look often found in Japanese fashion magazines.

When she returned to the Mainland, she's a lot more relaxed. In Japan, she would have to constantly remind herself to be deferential with her legs closed when she's sitting and slightly learning to the left. In Beijing, she can temporarily forgot about this and it's not as rigid.

When she's talking, she often likes to say "yeah" and other pauses like nodding in agreement to the conversation. These are her habits and catchphrases.

About her first concert in Japan, she said it's scary when she thinks about it. Her mind was blank and her consciousness was like rain hitting the curtains. She slowly regained her state of mind at the very last second of the prelude. The melody and lyrics of the song then came out. She was too nervous. For the last concert of the tour, she was a lot more relaxed. She even sat down and like other big artists, she carelessly threw her towel into the crowd.

She carried an "Hamasaki Ayumi" dream and began her journey to stardom. The thing that welcomed her was disappointment. When she opened the door to the apartment that the company provided for her, her dreams stopped. This room only had about 10 square meters. Last year when her mother and she were welcomed by the company, the room they lived in was at least 5 times bigger.

Japanese lessons, dance lessons, music lessons......The hardest were dance lessons. She would practice till she was dizzy and throwing up.

Her first single "Ashita e no Sanka" sold 4,729 copies and the highest ranking was #69. After a few months, her second single only sold 1,000 copies and fell off the charts after #100.

She dreamed that someone was going to kill me and that her singles were stacking up like mountains because no one will buy them...She fearfully asked her boss if sales keep on being like this, will you "send" me back to China? The boss's reply was it's ok for 5 to 6 years, but you have to work hard.

She had to attend many TV variety shows and radio broadcasts. She would sign her CDs for sale. She also become a model for some magazines. In one year, alan had went to 47 prefectures. "You have to go to really small record stores and other places to sing when you release a single, so it feels like you're a street performers."

"You chose to come to the place with the worst competition to become a celebrity in the whole world", alan said, "and there are many newcomers in the company, so you will be buried if you don't try your best."

The turning point happened in 2008. Avex had the right to recommend a singer for the theme song of "RED CLIFF" since they're one of the investors. alan was interested. Both "RED CLIFF" versions were very well received in Japan with the sales as high as 10.55 billion yen. Borrowing the popularity of the movie, alan's theme song for the movie "Kuon no Kawa" was the champion for the daily singles chart. She was 3rd place for Japan's "Oricon" weekly singles chart. The previous record held by a Chinese was at #9 and that record was created by Faye Wong 11 years ago.

For a 23 years old girl, this kind of results is already very impressive. She continued to release albums and singles nonstop. She even had her own solo tour.

For these 3 years, alan has tried ballads, soft rock, new age, folk, electronica, and other genres. Fans discovered that the Tibetan wail was less found in alan's albums. She won't look down on those "easy songs" anymore. "I will sing songs that everyone can sing."

After dinner, Avex didn't give her anymore work. This was one moment of freedom for alan.

That was the time when alan really felt loneliness and she would just drink some wine by herself at times. "I would return home and it would be so quiet everywhere. There wasn't any living things in the rooms, so I thought that the house got so quiet that it's scary." With no friends around her, alan would get on QQ to chat with her family. Her mother would ask how are you? Are you good? She would say really good, really really good.

For the price of fame, what's the thing that you miss the most?

"Freedom. There are some things that I can't do if I want to do them." There are times where she would write out her feelings on her blog, and then she would wake up the next morning to see that her assistant already deleted them. "After becoming a celebrity, you're not only living for yourself." She said, but she doesn't regret it. "One time I went to Dalian to perform and saw some classmates from my school and I thought, God, my life is totally different than from that time."
